CCEM Overview

Conference Scope

The Ninth IEEE International Conference on Cloud Computing in Emerging Markets (CCEM) continues the highly successful CCEM conference series which was originally launched in 2012. This conference is Scopus indexed.

Cloud computing has emerged as a dominant and transformational paradigm in information technology over the last few years and is beginning to effect a multitude of industries such as government, finance, telecommunications, education, retail, energy and utilities, and transportation. Research in this field has become very active and spans a number of areas including virtualization, networking, storage, security, management of cloud services, efficient cloud architectures, massive multi-tenancy, and design of cloud applications and services. Cloud computing continues to be the way of the future and many studies indicate that more than 50% of all information technology will be in this new paradigm within the next five to ten years. This transformation has great implications for emerging markets which have the potential to leap frog mature markets in their adoption of cloud computing, combine cloud computing and mobile technologies to introduce unique services that can transform the lives of billions, drive a much larger scale of adoption and challenge existing price points, while presenting unique challenges in areas such as security and user interfaces to cloud computing.

The goal

This research driven innovation conference has established itself as a unique conference that combines top notch peer-reviewed research papers (acceptance rate less than 10%), invited talks from renowned industry and government leaders, posters and demos showcasing latest innovations, a startup showcase highlighting the vibrant and fast growing business ecosystem around cloud, tutorials on cutting edge topics, and a doctoral symposium featuring some of the deep research topics being pursued by academic leaders.

Conference Format

The conference will be a online four-day event that spans invited talks, peer reviewed paper presentations, tutorials,technology showcase followed by panel discussion.

Prof. Alex Waibel

Prof. Alex Waibel

Carnegie Mellon University, USA & Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany.

Alexander Waibel is Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University(USA) and at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany). He is director of the International Center for Advanced Communication Technologies. Waibel is internationally known for his work on AI, Machine Learning, Multimodal Interfaces and Speech Translation Systems. He and his team developed early NeuralNetwork based Speech and Language systems, including the TDNN, the first“Convolutional” Network. Combining such advances in ML with work on better multi modal interfaces, Waibel devoted decades of his work to developing first speech translation and simultaneous interpreting solutions in an effort to over come language barriers. He published extensively in the field (>900 pubs,>30,000 citations, h-index >88), received numerous patents and awards and founded more than 10 companies in an effort to transfer academic results to practical deployment. Waibel is a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Germany and aFellow of the IEEE. He received BS, MS and PhD degrees from MIT and CMU, respectively.

Waibel graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Carnegie Mellon University.

Dr. Gopal Pingali is an internationally renowned technology, innovation, and transformation executive with extensive experience in driving digital transformation across multiple industries leveraging Cloud, AI and Automation technologies. Gopal is currently CEO and Founder of cYAAG, a Cloud and AI startup whose vision is to make everyone a social entrepreneur to create a sustainable world

Gopal worked extensively in the US and India and built several global technical organizations with an entrepreneurial spirit. He was previously Global Vice President at IBM for Cloud Transformation and Global Technology Services Labs (GTS Labs). Prior to that he was a Research Leader at the IBM TJ Watson Research Center and at AT&T Bell Labs. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Gopal pioneered innovations in many areas including Multicloud Management, Cognitive Automation, Continuous Security, Mobile Web, Electronic Chronicles, Real-time Video Tracking Systems, Smart Interactive Spaces, Visual Information Systems for Sports, Autonomous Vehicles, and Nanotechnology.

Dr. Louis-Philippe Morency is a French Canadian researcher interested in human communication and machine learning applied to a better understanding of human behaviour.

Dr. Morency is currently assistant professor at the Language Technologies Institute of Carnegie Mellon University. He was formerly research assistant professor at the University of Southern California (USC) and research scientist at USC Institute for Creative Technologies where he led the Multimodal Communication and Computation Laboratory (MultiComp Lab). He received his Ph.D. from MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory

Dr. Rama Govindaraju is a Director of Engineering at Google where he leads the Systems Infrastructure Performance Engineering team. Prior to that, Rama was a Distinguished Engineer at IBM, responsible for leading the Software Architecture at IBM's Supercomputing Lab where he led the development of 5 generations of Supercomputers.

Rama received his MS and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York and BE in Computer Science from BIT Mesra, Ranchi, India.

Dr. Rong N. Chang is with IBM Research, T.J. Watson Research Center. He is a member of IBM Academy of Technology and chair of IBM Research Services PIC (Professional Interest Community). He is leading an in-market research & development effort in creating a hybrid cloud based composable enterprise microservices fabric for intelligent computing infrastructures. He received his Ph.D. degree in computer science & engineering from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1990. He has received six IBM corporate-level Outstanding Technical Achievement Awards, held 30+ patents, and published 50+ refereed technical papers in the areas of distributed services computing.

Dr. Chang is the chair of IEEE Technical Committee on Services Computing, associate editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Services Computing, and a distinguished member of ACM. He is on the steering committee of IEEE CCEM and IEEE World Congress on Services, and is general chair of 2020 IEEE SERVICES Symposia.

Dr. Manjunath Ramachandra is working as Principal consultant at the CTO office of Wipro Limited, Bangalore, India. He has filed about 80 patents, chaired 33 conferences, conducted 19 tutorials and workshops, delivered 24 keynotes, authored 182 Research papers and a book.

He was a key member in the TDLS task force of Wi-Fi Alliance, served as the editor for the regional profiles standard in Digital living network alliance (DLNA) and as the industry liaison officer for the CE-Linux Forum. His areas of research include communications, deep learning, AI applications etc.

Dr. Josef Spillner is Theme Lead for Distributed Application Computing Paradigms and Service Prototyping and Fellowship holder of the digitalisation initiative of the canton of Zurich in Switzerland. His teaching schedule is focused on Big Data Computing, Cloud Native Computing and Serverless Computing. He conducts scientific research and applied innovation transfer in the same areas.

Panagiotis is a Ph.D. candidate and Research Assistant at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), in collaboration with the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He received his master's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, specializing in Information Technology

In 2018, he joined the Service Engineering Group at the Institute of Applied Information Technology of the ZHAW and focused his research activities on distributed systems and service engineering, working on several applied research projects. His doctoral work focuses on federated monitoring and data management, and their application in obtaining trustworthy quality metrics for cloud software


Hwee Ming Ng

Principal Technologist, Redhat, Singapore.

Hwee Ming is a product manager with Red Hat focusing on Cloud Infrastructure. She is based in Singapore and supports the APJ region. She works with customers across the region helping them leverage Red Hat Technology to build hybrid cloud solution across physical, virtualization and containerization platform.

She has also been working with service providers, adopting these technologies for Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and has worked on multiple NFV proof-of-concept and deployments across the regions. She has also been helping network equipment providers in APAC with the certification of their VNF on Red Hat Openstack platform as well as the supporting them with the joint solution with Red Hat. Hwee Ming has also been working with managed cloud provider to build solution based on Red Hat’s cloud infrastructure technologist.

Before Red Hat, Hwee Ming worked with HP and she has over 15 year experience in the industry working on OSS, Next Generation Intelligent networks, Converged networks, NOC consolidation and regulatory compliance

Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research India

Ranjita is Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research India. Her research predominantly focuses on problems related to networked and distributed systems. Ranjita has worked for more than a decade on applying machine-learning to improve system reliability, security and performance, and her work recently received the Best Paper Award at USENIX OSDI 2018. She has also chaired multiple top conferences in the field of systems and networking

Ranjita received her Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from University of California, San Diego and a BTech in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

Overview

The ninth edition of the IEEE International Conference on Cloud Computing in Emerging Markets (CCEM) offers an ideal platform for innovators, researchers and students on Cloud computing and its associated technology areas and applications - these have emerged as a dominant and transformational paradigm influencing many institutions and industry-sectors such as Health, Governance, Banking, Finance, Telecommunications, Education, Retail, Energy, Utilities, and Transportation. Innovations in this spans a number of areas including virtualization, networking, storage, security, management of cloud services – hybrid & on-premise, efficient interoperable cloud architectures, as well as design of cloud applications and services. This transformation has great implications for emerging markets & Nations, in their adoption of cloud computing, combine cloud computing, social media and mobile technologies to introduce unique services that can transform the lives of billions, drive much larger scale of adoption & challenge existing price points, while presenting unique challenges in areas such as security, data privacy and user interfaces to cloud computing.

Call for Technical Research Papers:

We invite Research papers submissions on all topics relevant to Cloud Computing in Emerging Markets as listed above. Papers should typically include a clear description of the problem being addressed, overview of and comparison to related work, the theoretical framework/model proposed by the authors, experimentation details and the experimental results, and conclusions. Papers will be reviewed by an international program committee which will ensure that only high-quality papers with originality and novelty are accepted for presentation in the conference.

The Papers can be either
  • A full research paper of maximum 8 pages with complete and substantial research outcomes
  • A short research paper of 4 pages that is complete but discussing a limited contribution
